How to put Grommets in Hoodies: Sewing with Megan🧵

Are you ready to take your hoodies to the next level? Are you thinking about selling your makes and want them to look more professional?

I live in my hoodies during the Fall and Winter Season (okay, and Spring as well). When I started, I would make buttonholes for the opening for my drawstrings. As I got into PDF pattern groups, I noticed many people use grommets. I thought they looked nice, but I was nervous I would mess it up. So, out of fear, I wasted a whole year not adding grommets! So when I finally got the courage, I found out how EASY it was to make!

If you are worried like I was, I would advice to practice first on scrap fabrics. You will notice how easy it will be to do and be confident enough to do it again!

Materials, Fabric & Pattern

Materials

Matching Thread
Grommets and Tools (I like 1/4 to 1/2) These can be found on Amazon, Walmart, or any Craft Store.
Drawstring
Mid-weight Fusible Interfacing
Cutting Mat & Rotary Cutter -if you don’t have these, that’s okay. You can use Fabric Scissors.
Straight Pins and Quilting Clips
Iron and Ironing Board/Mat
Sewing Machine / Serger

Fabric

Any Knit Fabric will do. My personal favorite is French Terry! In the tutorial, I used this fabric. The pocket material is double-brushed poly available here. The bands are ribbed knit available here.

Pattern

Adult classic sweater pattern from Peek a Boo. (Free when you join their group on Facebook). I also used the crossover hood from the adult hoodie add on pack.

Lets get started!

Now that you have all your materials together, let’s get started! Since this tutorial is for the grommets, I am going to skip to that part. Make the bodice for the hoodie, just follow the pattern as instructed.

For the hood, attach both sides together. I also like to go ahead and attach my lining to the main piece so that I don’t have to try and serge around my grommets as they are pretty thick.

Step One: Marking

Mark where you want to put the grommets. I do this by pinning through my main layer of fabric from the ‘right’ side. The ‘right’ side of the fabric is the outward facing side with the print. Click the image to see it larger.

Step Two: Separating the Lining

Place the fusible interfacing where your markings are. Click the image to see it larger.

Step Three: Interfacing

Turn your hood inside out and separate the lining from the main fabric. Click the image to see it larger.

Step Four: Pressing with Iron

Using an iron, press the interfacing down carefully. Click the image to see it larger.

Step Five: Placing of Grommets

Place your grommet on top of your interfacing where you want it to go. With a pen, trace the inside circle. Click the image to see it larger.

Step Six: Cutting an X

Be careful here! Cut a small x inside your circle. Make sure to go all the way to the edge but not past the circle. If you do, your grommet won’t have anything to hold onto Click the image to see it larger.

Step Seven: Putting the Grommet

Step Eight: Using the Eyelet Setting Tool

Place your fabric and grommet with the main fabric side down onto the eyelet setting tool. This is the flat piece with a circle indentation that came with the kit. Place the Anvil on top. So, you should have from the bottom up, the eyelet setting tool, the grommet, main fabric print side down, back grommet, anvil. Click the image to see it larger.

Step Nine: Forging of Anvil

Hammer the anvil down. I like to do this on top of a piece of wood outside as it can be loud. Make sure to do it on a sturdy surface! Your grommets are ONLY going through your main fabric. Do not put it through the lining as well. Click the image to see it larger.

There you have it! Putting Grommets is easy but you have to be careful when you use the anvil.
